Yard Waste
Non-woody yard, garden and food waste.
Mow your lawn on a regular basis to keep the clippings short and let them fall where they may. This can feed your lawn and make it healthier.
Leaves and grass clippings can be used as mulch in gardens and flower beds to reduce weeds, nourish the soil and retain moisture. Garden wastes, decayed vegetables and fruits can be composted. Fruit and vegetable food scraps can be put in a home compost pile. Meat, poultry and fish products cannot be composted. For information on gardening and yard waste composting, log on to the University of Minnesota website at www.extension.umn.edu or you can call the Olmsted County Extension Service (507 285-8250) or the Olmsted County Public Works Department (507 328-7070). Leaves and grass clippings can be brought at no charge to the Olmsted County Compost Site located east of the Recycling Center at 305 Silver Creek Road N.E. Finished compost is available for a nominal fee.
