Child Care Licensing


Family Child Care is a rewarding and demanding profession. A child care provider may be the most important influence in the lives of children, after their parents. The way providers care for children and guide their growth will be a part of shaping their future. Olmsted County has over 500 licensed child care providers. 

If you are interested in more information on becoming a licensed child care provider
  • Attend first & second child care orientation sessions
  • Review frequently asked questions by applicants 
  • Email specific questions 

Steps To Become A Licensed Child Care Provider:

  • Must attend both orientation sessions, applications are given out at the first orientation session
  • Complete and return the application packet with the licensing fee to start the process (should be done within a year of attending both orientation sessions)
  • Complete and return other forms that are provided at orientation:
    • Physician's report
    • Home safety checklist
    • Landlord permission 
    • Other forms requested by licensor
  • A licensor will send out a letter with additional and/or missing paperwork to complete
  • Return forms in the packet to the licensor 
  • A licensor will contact you to set up a time to visit you and your home when all of the paperwork is on file

Applicants will need to show documentation that the following training has been completed prior to licensure (Requirements):

  • First Aid Training
  • Infant/child CPR training 
  • Sudden Unexpected Infant Death 
  • Abusive Head Trauma 
  • Developmentally Appropriate Behavior Guidance (4 hour class)
  • Supervising for Safety (6 hour class)
  • Child Passenger Restraint Systems training (required prior to transporting children)

Upon the completion of all paperwork, all background studies, 3 references on file, and the home in total compliance a license may be issued to you.
