Adoption - How Do I Get Started

If you decide that you would like to adopt or become a permanency resource family, we will ask that you attend the adoption training and an orientation that will give you more information on the programs and answer questions that you might have. This training will give you an overview of the kids waiting to be adopted, their needs, your ability and desire to parent kids with special needs, and a chance to network with other pre-adoptive parents.

Upon completion of the informational session and two training sessions, we will begin your adoption home study.

  • The home study process is a commitment and can take up to sixteen hours of your time to complete.
  • We begin by giving you an application after the orientation session.
  • We will then talk to you and all the other adults and children in your household so we may get to know you, your parenting style and philosophy and how special needs children will fit into your immediate and extended family system.
  • There are a total of 11 other training sessions that will be required for you to attend.
Once your home study is completed, we will register you on the Minnesota Adoption Exchange or help connect you with some of the children involved in concurrent planning. This exchange, in addition to our agency, will attempt to match you with Minnesota waiting children or those children who come into Concurrent Planning Program that need a resource family.

We cannot estimate how long it will take to match you with a waiting child or a child needing a resource family, however, you have our assurance that we will do our best to facilitate any possible matches.

We encourage you to call and ask any questions that you develop throughout the process. We can be reached at 507 328-6456 or 507 328-6432 if you have questions or want more information on the next orientation.
