Olmsted County Public Health now accepting online orders for radon test kits

Radon air testing
If you have not tested for radon in your home recently, you may want to consider purchasing a test kit through Olmsted County Public Health Servicesā€™ (OCPHS) new online radon test request site. When purchasing a kit online, buyers will schedule a time to pick up the test at the OCPHS building at 2100 Campus Drive SE in Rochester.

Each kit costs $21 and includes a set of instructions. To get an accurate reading, the kit needs to be placed in your home for 4-7 days before it can be returned to OCPHS.

Why radon testing is important

Radon is a colorless and odorless radioactive gas that comes from the soil and that gas can accumulate in the air we breathe. Exposure to radon over a long period of time can lead to lung cancer.

Over half of Olmsted County homes have levels much greater than the action limit set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ā€“ which is 4 pCi/L (picocuries of radon per liter of air). This is due to our geology and how our homes are operated. Minnesota homes are closed up or heated most of the year, which can result in higher levels of radon.

A radon test is the only way to know how much radon is in your home. If household radon levels test at 4 pCi/L or higher, a radon mitigation system can be installed to reduce those levels significantly.
